“Rapeseed oil – too good to be true?”
– a program to improve awareness of rapeseed oil and increase consumption

”Rapeseed oil – too good to be true?” is a three-year program designed to improve awareness of the characteristics of rapeseed oil and its recent evolution and to increase consumption by informing consumers, medical and paramedical professions about the use and nutritional value of rapeseed oil. Target groups include households (especially persons responsible for purchases), opinion leaders (journalists, chefs, medical and nutritional professionals), distributors, medical and paramedical press and the agro-food industry.

The program provides up-to-date information on the importance of rapeseed oil as part of a balanced and healthy diet, its beneficial fatty acids composition, its use in cooking as well as the evolution of the product and its varieties.

Jointly financed by the European Union, the State of Finland and the Finnish Food and Drink Industries' Federation (Oil Millers’ Association), the program is directed toward the internal EU market.

Good source of healthy fats

A large crop plant with bright yellow flowers that can be cultivated throughout the European Union, rapeseed is primarily grown for its oil and meal but also as a forage crop. Rapeseed oil is produced by pressing the oil from the seeds and refining it to remove free fatty acids and other impurities.

Rapeseed oil is a versatile cooking ingredient with proven health benefits. Containing plenty of soft,
poly- and monounsaturated fats and only a small amount of hard, saturated fats, it is a recommended part of a balanced diet. Unsaturated fats have been shown to help your heart stay healthy.

Rich in heart-friendly Omega acids

Rapeseed oil is rich in omega 6 and omega 3, the essential fatty acids that can’t be synthesised by the body and must be provided by the diet. What’s more, the ratio of omega 6 and omega 3 in rapeseed oil is beneficial to health.

It has been estimated that we need a couple of tablespoons of rapeseed oil in our daily food to get the essential fatty acids our body can’t do without.

The cooking oil for almost any dish

Thanks to its mildness, rapeseed oil is a good carrier of flavours. Its high heat stability makes it suitable for almost any kind of cooking, for example wokking, sautéing, frying, grilling and baking. You can even sprinkle it on a salad.

Rapeseed oil is also widely used in everyday foodstuff, such as vegetable oil spreads, readymade meals, salad dressings, marinades and bakery products. Check the ingredients list – you may have already been eating more healthily than you thought!
